Notes from James Turrell book "A life in light"

Light is everywhere. Existance is immpossible without it. For this reason, perhaps, light appears over and over again as a symbol in the world's greatest poems, paintings and novels.

But light is perhaps best unterstood outside a moral framework- as pure force, as a pouring source, as the absolute essence of biological life on this planet earth.

Light is physical. It arrives. We see it. Our eye decodes its presence and sends information to our brain. We may see it differently one from another and we may see the same light differently one day from another. Yet light is matter and its matter that defines our very existance.
Light- Notes from J.Turrell book "A life in light" and thoughts and ideas from secondary research.

-Metaphor for exsistance.
-
Physicality of light
-Faith/Spirituality
-Lighting qualities & conditions?
-Lighting is the subject itself or creating lighting experience?
-Absence of light rather than object.

Experiences, rather than objects- which later, may seem as vivid and strange as perfectly recollected dreams.

Manipulation of light = PERCEPTIONS.

Film: What a bleep!?: Down the rabbit hole (2006)

Reality + Possibilities = New vision (Realisation).

The whole film is so interesting- one of those that you want to take a note on every single word they say.

Thoughts while watching the film:
Past causes present and future causing present.
What's the matter- human mind forcing us or possibilities for a human mind?
What influences perceiving certain information?

I started with James Turrell work. Went to an exhibition earlier this year and found his exhibition a very strange and uncomfortable space to be at. Whole space was filled with light and fog, making space an infinite, not having anywhere to focus and insecure, in my personal experience. What inspired him to do so? what lighting means to him? How does he manipulate it?

Spatial strategies

For the second term we have a new brief- Spatial Strategies. As I understood the brief, it aims towards creating a space used for production, a narrative. Space with programe or performance of some sort involved.

Dictionary:

1. Alternative chosen to make happen a desired future, such as achievement of a goal or solution to a problem.
2. Art and science of planning and marshalling resources for their most efficient and effective use. The term is derived from the Greek word for generalship or leading an army. See also tactics.

I thought it will be a good idea to involve a title of an essay into my project and it will be useful in both ways- will enrich knowledge of both essay and project work and also learning from the last project mistake- will be one clear path to start with and hopefully will not end up jumping from one theme to another at the end. The title of the essay is Space and time in installations concerning light and the qualities of the analog and digital used. Anthony McCall and James Turrell case studies.
